Hidden Valley Nature Center Run in the Woods

Really fun day today up at the Hidden Valley Nature Center! Ryan ran the half marathon and Sam did the kids obstacle course run. Sam had a great time on the course, and Ryan came in third and first in his age group, winning a yummy pie for his efforts. Yah! After some early morning showers, it turned into a beautiful fall day and we had fun hanging out with friends in a cool setting!

Weekend Miles

The last "big" weekend... well, it didn't quite go as planned but I still got in some decent miles.

The plan was for 24 at Bradbury. Started at 6:30 am, my car the only one in the lot. A reminder from Ryan about the 12 hours of Bradbury starting on Saturday helped me decide to do my lap on the east side first. I ran the Scuffle, and only ran into one biker. Perfect. Of course, I came around the bend to hear him let out a huge belch. Ha :) My legs, on the other hand, were not feeling so perfect. They felt much like concrete in fact. Pace wasn't terrible, but the legs, they had no life.

I stopped back at the lot, hit the bathroom, and then texted Ryan to let him know that "long" might be relative today. I was going to continue on but wasn't sure how long I would last. I was just feeling out of sorts, with my stomach joining in on the rebellion. Oh yah. I ran the west side of the BBU loop but when I got back to the summit after the Tote, I turned to run down the Terrace instead of heading out to run Lunchbreak. This brought me to a nice even 15 soggy, sloggy miles. My legs never gained any umph and I just didn't have it in me to keep pushing. I suppose I could have/should have, but eh, I was OK with stopping. I went home, showered and slathered Biofreeze on my sore, tired legs before heading down to Portland to the Mall to take in our sick computer. Thoughts of the Mall and sick computer both make my head hurt but luckily the kind Genius at the Genius Bar thought it was just some sort of corruption and not an issue with the hard drive, etc. He was able to wipe the computer clean and not have to replace any hardware. This was all done at no charge and I was out of there in around an hour. Phew! Not as terrible as anticipated. Plus, I did stop at ColdStone to get a Mud Pie Mojo to ease my pain so that helped ;)

I actually slept well last night, perhaps a sign that things were in fact a bit more off yesterday than just a bit of unhappy legs. Oh, and Ryan says his co-worker told him that Mercury was in retrograde so that was why everyone was feeling out of sync this week. Sure, any excuse will do ;)

Up early again this morning, this time so I could get donuts at Frosty's before meeting Amy at 6:30 am for a morning run at Pineland. Yum, pumpkin donuts. Yah fall! We headed down toward the yurt, the sky still filled with the pastel colors of dawn, a low fog settled above the wet fields. So pretty.

We meandered around the lower trails before heading back up towards Oak Hill. We didn't get far before I asked Amy if we could do the inner loop so we could head over to the market so I could use the bathroom. Things were starting to heat up a bit and so we made our way back over to Oak Hill to enjoy the shaded trails. The trails had been marked with a lot of flagging and as we wound around toward the top of the field, we noticed a lot of buses unloading long legged runners. Ah, a cross country meet. Time to get out of there!

Amy decided to finish up once we got to the cars, leaving me with 4 miles to round things out to 20. I ran the campus loop, which only got me about 2.5 miles - darn - meaning the final 1.5 miles were a rather random wander around the campus without going too far down the hill - that uphill stretch is definitely not my favorite! My legs felt tired but oh so much better than yesterday! Having company definitely helped - it's always nice to talk away the miles, but I didn't feel the urge to stop at 16; I really wanted to get in those miles, if for nothing else other than the mental aspect.

We were meeting up with Ryan and Mindy for a short TARC meeting, so while we waited we walked over and sat for a while in the shade in the Pineland Gardens. It was really beautiful over there! A nice place to while away a half hour.

All in all, a decent 2 days of running, even if it all didn't quite go as planned. But then again, does it ever?!

Great Grammie's Button Box

Sam has a wonderful keepsake from Phyllis, her button box. This mahogany box came home with Ryan this summer when he spent a day helping his parents clean out his grandparents house. It was full of buttons, just the sort of thing Sam would love.

She opens it from time to time to continue sorting the buttons. She has them sorted into very Samantha categories, like pretty and really pretty, wood, plastic, soft, and of course, those that are soft and hard.

Earlier this week, she picked up the box, brought it to the couch and opened it up, saying, "this smells just like Great Grammie and Bampie's house." Then, After a bit of quiet sorting,  "I forget them sometimes, but then, when I open this box, I think of them and I remember."

Such a wise old soul. I hope the button box always brings back the smell and memory of Phyllis and Ted for her. So special.

Morning Sixes

Met up with Shannon on Tuesday  morning for a run through the Commons. It was just beginning to get light when we left her house at 6:00am and the first bit in the woods was run in the murky morning dimness. We haven't run together in a few weeks so it was fun to catch up! A good 6.4 miles for the day.

Yesterday morning, I had intended to run longer but didn't quite get up in time, so I headed out at 5:50am to run 6 miles on the cart paths. Definitely dark at the start but the perk was seeing the sunrise as I dropped down to Highland Green after taking the road up over Mt A. Always nice.

Also saw one red eft and moved him off the path in the direction of the pond nearby. Such interesting creatures. I do love seeing them:)

Baking!

Tomorrow is the last day of the summer series at Bradbury so Sam and I spent a big chunk of the morning and afternoon after swim lessons (and donuts, of course :) ) baking. She loves to help and even though it takes about twice as long, I'm happy to have her share in on the fun. Maybe someday soon she can do it all herself and I can just sit around eating bonbons ;) HA!

Once we were done, Ryan needed to head out to the store to get some supplies for post-race so he took Sam with him and I was able to head out for my run. It was probably 2:30ish by the time I hit the trails. The day had warmed up and my legs felt a bit heavy, unused to the afternoon start, but it was beautiful out with a nice breeze and very comfortable temps once I reached the shaded woods. I ran down along the Cathance - boy, the river is low! - and out toward Head of Tides. I ran into a father and daughter hiking in the Cathance proper, as well as an older couple out hiking on the newer trails, but otherwise had the trails to myself.

Turned around just shy of Head of Tides itself at Cathance Road and made my way back. Once again, many pretty mushrooms in the woods, and saw another red eft. Out along the powerlines the berries on the bushes (viburnum?) have began to morph from white into blush pink and deep purple.  So pretty against the blue sky. Got in a nice 10 for the day.

Brunswick Trail Wander

I've been feeling tired this week. Tired no doubt from last weekend's miles and also from sleeping incredibly poorly. Ack. So frustrating, this not sleeping! But anyway.... I wanted to get in my miles on Friday but wanted to keep them mellow so decided to do a big Brunswick loop after dropping Sam off at school. I was feeling a bit blah and Conditions were looking marginal, with rain, wind and general dreariness, but I told myself to suck it up and just go already :) Luckily for me, the rain stopped about a mile in, so once I got into the woods near Thorton Oaks, I stopped to reconfigure things, taking off my long sleeve shirt, etc, and then continued on my way. I ran on the BTLT trails around Crystal Spring Farm first, taking a few off-shoots that Shannon and I don't normally run, just to see where they ended up. On this overcast, rather dreary day, the woods offered up some fine colors nonetheless. Saw a ton of mushrooms - yellow, orange, red, even purple! And the green moss looked wonderfully vibrant.

I crossed the blueberry barrens to the high school road and then scooted into the woods on the other side into what was always known as the extended Commons back in our Bowdoin days. I took the first right, running out through a pretty, wide expanse of grass and lichen underneath pine trees to the edge of Rossmore before turning back around.

Then out to the edge of the pond before taking another turn-off that I had yet to explore. This one brought me to the end of the trail system by another route. A bit of pavement and dirt road followed as I made my way out into Pennelville.

I wasn't sure what condition the Coleman Farm trails would be in, but my luck held, as they had been recently mowed. Out at the end of the peninsula, I scared up a flock of six egrets and stopped to watch them soar over the marsh grasses as they settled back down in another patch of water.

The final stretch took me through the Commons and on the trails along the edge of the playing fields. In the end, with all my wanderings and explorations, my Garmin read 16.0, exactly what I was hoping for! Legs felt decent and despite my initial misgivings, it was a nice morning on the trails.

Muggy

Summer humidity still lingers and man, the early morning running has been muggy!

Got out yesterday for six miles on the cart paths. Tire overall but legs felt ok. Saw two red newts along the way and stopped to eat a few of what will probably be the final blackberries of the season.

This morning, I did not want to get out. Going back to starting runs in the dark is a tough transition. Pushed myself out the door, and the skies must have known I needed some encouragement as I was treated to a beautiful sunrise over the Heath. So pretty and peaceful with the Heath full of cotton sedge and the sky alight with color. Took it easy and got in another six for the week.

Long Weekend Fun

Yesterday was a fairly mellow day, with pancakes and bacon in the morning and some game playing before spending the afternoon out in Harpswell at Sam's friend's Anne's grandparents house, enjoying the pool and the ocean, not to mention their nice hospitality and a fun dinner. The girls had a great time, and it is oh so beautiful out there for sure. My legs felt fairly decent, in part, no doubt, to the BioFreeze that Ryan applied to my quads on Saturday night - those muscles were barking after the long day on the trails. It felt good to walk around but I had no desire to try to run!

Today I felt good enough to try for a run this morning, and was happy to find that although I felt a general fatigue overall, my legs weren't particularly crampy or stiff. It was pretty warm out but I was out early enough that the heat wasn't too big of a factor. It took a few miles to shake things out but I had a good 6 mile run out in the Cathance and back on the roads. Ran into Jim Gott on the road, and he was like, "What are you doing back out running already after Saturday?!" Ha! No rest for the weary, man ;) We stopped to catch up for a bit, which was fun, before continuing on our own runs.

The afternoon was spent over in Bath, enjoying the trails at Thorne Head. Things had really heated up by the time we got out there after lunch, and despite the slow pace that Sam set on the hike, we were all sweating. Still, it is really a nice place to hike and we had it almost all to ourselves. We got in almost 2 miles in about 2 hours, although only an hour was moving time. HA! That is what we get hiking with a 5 year old :) The hike and the heat called for an ice cream stop on the way home. All in all a great day, and a fun extra day off together!

UXBBAS

So, the training plan I'm following (or not following, as the case may be ;) ), calls for one last long-long run of 50 miles. The only 50 mile race around here that was even remotely in the right timeframe is the TARC Fall Classic next weekend, but to be honest, that seemed a bit too close to the 100. Plus, it is the Bruiser weekend. So, I decided I would run all three dirt courses plus a lap of the BBU course this weekend instead. It would come up short of 50 miles but the effort would be there, terrain would be comparable and 43 hard Bradbury miles should more than suffice to fulfill the requirements of that last long-long run.

Over the course of a message thread with Sean regarding the 100, I had mentioned my plan. He asked me to keep him in the loop, and I ended up including Val, Mindy and John too, hoping that I might get some company on all or part of the route. In the end, it never worked out to meet up with Val or Mindy, although we saw Val out on the trail several times. Sean met me at the Brad yesterday morning at 5:00 am. It was dark and cool, probably 52 or 53 degrees, and Orion's Belt shone brightly above us in the star-filled sky. We took off across the street for the Scuffle. Sean seemed content to keep the pace I set, which was great, as one of my main objectives for the run was to have it be MY run at my pace. It wasn't that I didn't want company or input, it was more that I wanted to be sure that it all worked for me since it was my one chance to get in the run, and get it right.

I tried to keep the pace comfortable but fairly effortless, and I think it worked. There was no tripping or falling in the dark, and our headlamps stayed on until about halfway down the snowmobile trail by which time there was enough light to see without. We saw several frogs and toads hopping off the trail in the darkness.

We ended up back at the lot with the Garmin showing somewhere around 1:13 or 1:14. I was desperate for the bathroom, so there was a brief stop before continuing onto the Breaker. The pace slowed a bit during these miles, as there was the inevitable hiking, walking thrown in on the hills but we tried to keep it steady. On the first loop, there was a neat undercast, mist, fog floating around the tops of the trees as we looked down into the valley at the summit. We also had a flyby from John B., who was doing his own run and was literally dancing down the trail, gone in a flash after a short conversation along the trail.

We finished up the Breaker to find John and Rick in the lot. John had planned to meet us for the Bruiser, and we had missed the 8:00 group by about 14 minutes. We stopped to refill our packs and use the bathrooms before heading out. John kept us amused during the Bruiser, telling stories and filling us in on his ES100 run. Although Sean and I had had some good conversations in the first miles, we also had some comfortable silence. I'm not sure there was any silence with John, but I wouldn't expect it any other way :) The weather was still holding nicely - it wasn't hot and there was none of the humidity that plagued John and my UXBBA run back in August. This made the O trail a bit more tolerable, although there was still plenty of cursing :)

I was supposed to text Ryan before heading out onto the Bruiser but completely forgot, remembering out in the middle of the trail, right around mile 20. I knew there'd be big trouble if I didn't get in touch, so I stopped and texted him right there. Response? "You're grounded." Ha. We all got a kick out of that. His plan was to meet John at the park with Sam, and then drive out to meet me at Lawrence Road for some of the BBU miles. John had nicely agreed to hang out with Sam so we could get in some miles together. What a guy! We are lucky to have him as a friend.

Back to the lot with the watch reading 5:55, about 50 minutes faster than last month's run of all three courses, and feeling good. But no Ryan. I texted to let him know we'd arrived, and they were just leaving the house. I don't think he had expected us back so soon. Mindy was there, having joined Val for some miles, as were Pete and the dogs, so John stayed with them, while Sean and I got ourselves organized for the BBU portion of the program. I'd been doing pretty well with the gels throughout, but was having trouble getting down the waffles and had only had one packet of chews. I did get through about 2/3 of a Fastbreak in the lot before the Bruiser, and found that the grapes I'd packed tasted delicious. None of the other dry food I had packed sounded appealing though.

Sean and I took off for the BBU, walking the Ski Trail hill this time, but running Krista's. I'm always surprised at how quickly the stretch between the park and Lawrence Road goes by - it really isn't that long, and I was relieved to see Ryan in the parking lot. I knew it would be close. I was also excited to see he had a bottle of coke for me. Yah! We stopped and waited for him to get ready and for me to drink some of the coke. It hit the spot. We took off up the road, Ryan by our side, nicely not pushing the pace, which I know was slow for him. Back at Lawrence Road, we stopped so I could drink some more coke. My stomach was feeling slightly off and the coke helped. Ryan offered to carry it back to the park for me, which was incredibly sweet. We also saw Billy coming across the road, and chatted with him a ways before he asked to join in with us. Sure! The more the merrier. He is a great guy and is planning to run the BBU 50, so we chatted about training, etc as we ran/hiked our way back to the park.

Running out to Lunchbreak, I took a huge digger, just before the hill up to the mossy open area before the descent. Ow. My calf cramped up as I tried to stop the fall and I sprawled to the ground, getting covered in dirt and gravel in the process. I felt a bit shaken up but OK aside from a scape on both knees and my left palm. We walked to the top of the hill where I took a salt tab and had some more coke. I was not eating anything at this point, although I had managed 2 gels earlier on the loop. I let Billy and Sean go ahead on the downhill; I just needed to take my time. We got back into "order" on the ascent, with me in the front, mostly walking the hill. No need to push ourselves too hard up that one at this point! Back to the summit and down the Terrace. Many more people out at this point. I am sure I looked a good wreck to most of them. HA!

Both Sean and I were out of fluids, so we stopped at the cars again to refill, and I tried to clean my hands off a bit with a few wipes. I forced down a gel, but would have preferred not to ;) John's car was in the lot, so we figured they'd already had lunch and were on the playground. Ryan texted to be sure things were going ok, and then nicely continued on with us to the east side so that we wouldn't get lost out there. I knew the way for the most part, but only in a vague way. I haven't run this portion of the course much. By this point, I was in no mood to take it easy, and wanted to get the run done. I was still feeling decent, if tired, and although we did take a few walk breaks here and there, we mostly ran and ran focused. We didn't manage to break 9:30 but came pretty close with the final time being 9:33, good for 42.3 miles on my Garmin. Sean's Garmin came in with higher mileage strangely, given that we have the same model, but whatever. I'll take it! It was a good confidence boosting run and I'm really happy with how it went mentally and physically, although I realize I am going to need to eat more in the 100. I think I did take in about 300 calories in coke in the final 10 miles though. HA!

Sean was a great partner out there, and I know he is going to do well in the 100. It was fun to work together on this run and we really are well matched running-wise. Hopefully we'll get some time on the trails together at TARC. Many thanks to John for running the Bruiser with us and then hanging out with Sam for the rest of the afternoon! Ryan and Billy rounded out the run by offering up some fun conversations and of course, navigational help :) All in all, a good day on the trails!

Ran into Val in the final mile, and captured our train in the woods :)

Chuggin' along

Cool, Bright and Alright

Ended up deciding to sleep in this morning so I headed out for my run after dropping Sam off at school, taking the recycling to the transfer station and dropping the car off for its 25,000 mile service. Luckily, the Toyota dealership is only about 0.3 miles from our house, so I just ran from there and then ran home :) I headed out through the Mt. A. trails into the Cathance, enjoying the crisp air and the bright sunlight.
The woods were beautiful and there are hints that fall is on its way.

For the first few miles, my legs felt heavy and the running seemed a chore. Uh oh. But things did loosen up as I ran along, and I got in a nice enjoyable 7 miles for the morning. Hopefully the legs will hold up well tomorrow - the final long-long run of the training cycle!

Now off to get some things done around the house!

Running with Friends

Had a nice run yesterday for the first time in way too long with Shannon. Met her at her house at 6:00 am and we ran a good loop through the BTLT trails around Crystsl Spring Farm for 6 miles.

Tonight, Amy and I met up at Pineland for a night run. Of course we ran into the campus police first :) but the officer was nice enough to let us stay parked and head out on our run. Well, we ate our donuts first... ;)

Donuts at dark

Really humid out but fairly cool. We ran out through the fields to the yurt. Turned off our lights and looked up at the murky but still starry night. Tons of little wood frogs jumping across the trail and one rustle in the bushes that intrigued me enough to take a look - it was a big porcupine trundling away :) Fun! Got in a good 7+ miles, chatting away and testing out our bright as all get-out headlamps :) Always good to run with Amy!
