Post-Race Fun, Day 2

Another glorious day here in Squaw Valley! It is really nice to have the chance to stay for a few days to explore a bit more of this beautiful area. Tuesday morning, Ryan got up and out early for a mountain run and Sam and I went down to the pool. She really wanted me to get into the water with her, so despite the fact that it was only like 65 degrees out and I am a total wimp when it comes to cold water, I dove in and hung out with her. I hope this wins me mother of the year 😂😂 because d*@n, it was chilly!! 😉

Less stiffness and soreness in my legs on day #2, although the quads were still complaining going down stairs and I definitely had that overall feeling of fatigue from a long effort and not a lot of sleep. Still, incredibly grateful that my body seems to be adapting to this crazy ultra stuff, even if it isn't super happy about it all the time 😂😂

Ryan ran into a lot of snow partway up the Granite Chief Trail and couldn't find the trail easily, so his long run turned into a shorter excursion. Bummer for him, but it made it easier for us to all get out and enjoy the afternoon! Sam really wanted to take the tram up to the top of the mountain as we've been watching it soar over our condo the whole time we've been here, so after getting lunch in the Village, we piled into one of the cars and made the trip up to High Camp. What a neat way to journey to the top. And what a view!

Up high, the wind was whipping and it must have been at least 10 degrees colder but oh man, it was seriously beautiful!

High Camp pool

We headed out on one of the singletrack hiking trails through fields of Mule's Ears with sweeping views of snow-covered peaks in all directions

Sam and Ryan got way up ahead...

Mom, Dad and I meandered along trying not to get blown away by the wind 😂

Western Buttercup

Not sure what this one was, but so pretty and purple!

We hiked all up to the snowline, where we admired the views and Sam and Neeenie had a snowball fight 😂😍 What's not to love about a snowball fight in July at 8,200 feet?!

At that point, Ryan, Sam and I kept going for a ways as I could see a thin ribbon of steep singletrack above one of the lifts with a few pink ribbons blowing in the breeze and knew that was the way up to the Escarpment during the race! It was a steep scramble through the loose scree and amongst the colorful wildflowers but it was fun to show Ryan and Sam a bit of the course!

Western Indian Paintbrush - so colorful!

Hiking up towards the Escarpment

From this rock outcropping, we could see further up to the snow-covered section that I followed to the top of the Escarpment and over the back side of the ski resort

Looping our way back down

Happy hikers 💗

Running on snow together 💕 I could only keep up for a few steps 😂 but what fun!

Running her way back down to High Camp

Swinging at High Camp

One more glorious view

It was such fun to get out and explore up in these high mountains, even if for a few hours. Sam had a blast and it was nice to be able to savor the views up here like I couldn't while racing! (1.8 miles walked)

We finished up the day with a bit more pool time for Sam and a yummy sushi dinner in Truckee. Another great vacation day 😃
