New England Weather

If you don't like the weather, just wait a minute... Yup, all the weather you could ask for this week. Well, except maybe 70 degrees and sunny! 😂 So maybe all the New England coastal winter weather you could ask for...😉

Started off the week with an indoor track walk during swim practice on Monday. (2.2 miles walked)

Didn't get out on Tuesday. Full day at work and then went to hear Sam sing at the winter chorus & band concert. Irene and Dana came up for the evening, so Sam had all the grandparents there to listen! 😊 The kids did a great job, even if there might have been less time singing than transitioning between all the groups on stage 😂😊

Got out Wednesday morning for a road run. Overcast and breezy, with some icy sidewalks just to keep things interesting. (6.6 miles)

Thursday, I got a bit of work done in the early morning hours, then went for a run after dropping Sam at school and then went into the office. Made for a bit of a disjointed day but it was nice to run trails in the daylight! Ran down to the river and back. Any pavement had hadn't yet seen the sun and all the bog bridges were pretty sketchy, but some neat ice formations along the river's edge. (6.1 miles)

A storm moved in on Friday but unfortunately, all it did all day long was mist and rain and stay in the low 30s without dropping enough to make the precipitation turn to snow. I decided it was probably a safer move to run on the trail instead of the roads in the bad weather, so after dropping the recycling off at the dump, I started my run at the Gone Fishing trails. Did a big powerlines loop and then added on a bit of the Gone Fishing singletrack. Sometimes I wonder if running days like this point to some sort of compulsion and obsession, or if getting out in sub-optimal conditions points to drive and motivation and determination. Probably some mix of the two 😂😉 Regardless, didn't see anyone else out there! Had originally planned for more miles but honestly, 8 was enough. (8.0 miles)

I am not amused by the weather 😆

I was actually surprised to wake up to snow on Saturday morning! But a nice surpise. Much better than more rain. Had to dig around in the attic to find my spikes, and woke everyone up. Oops! Sorry guys! On days like this, the best bet is almost always Highland Green, as it's quiet and safe. I stuck mostly to the roads but did take a short detour down to the river. Sloppy roads, wet snow, clumping spikes, and windy but very beautiful with all the trees covered in snow, and if you hit a stretch with the wind at your back, it was quite lovely out. Came home quite wet and snow-covered. (7.0 miles)

Sam had a swim meet at 1:00 so after a quick shower and a trip downtown to the Saturday farmer’s market, it was off to the Y. Main roads were fine as long as you went slowly but overall, just plain messy out there. Thankfully, the roads had cleared by the time I picked Sam up around 3:30, so we took a short detour on the way home to go to Fielder’s Choice before they closed for their winter break. Ice cream on a snowy day? Sure, why not?!? 😂😋

Finished up the running week with a late morning road run meandering around Highland Green this morning. Waited to get the cars moved and for the temperature to warm up and finally just figured I’d go with whatever was out there and headed out around 10:00. Found a little bit of everything - puddles, ice, snow, slush - and that was just on the roads. Nice morning though, almost balmy and calm. Didn’t quite get the 40 for the week I was planning on, but given the weather the past few days, glad to at least get in 10 for today. (10.0 miles)

Sam and Ryan were out Christmas shopping when I got back and then Sam spent a bit of time over at Mom and Dad’s putting together the gingerbread village Mom had picked up at Trader Joe’s while Ryan was out xc skiing, so it was a quiet afternoon for me with some house cleaning, bill paying and present wrapping. It was nice to have a bit of downtime before what is going to be a busy work week, and gearing up for Christmas!!
