Wednesday: Up and out into the muggy, windy, overcast morning for a run out on the powerlines and the Riverside trail. A fair number of stops to pick and eat blueberries and raspberries and enjoy the colorful wood lilies popping up amongst the greenery. Three of my favorite summer trail finds! π Also saw a deer and two fawn. The air was filled with the sweet scent of milkweek and hay scented ferns - lovely. Legs a bit heavy. (6.0 miles)
Got an early start on the work day so that I could join Ryan and Sam for an afternoon adventure out to Reid State Park. On a rather dreary, foggy, overcast Wednesday afternoon, we practically had the beach to ourselves! It was high tide (or close) and the waves were pounding the shore, so it was not a play in the waves kind of day, but we took a nice walk along the beach and Ryan and Sam stood down in the water for a bit, while I hung back, happy to only have my feet getting wet every once in a while πbefore we headed over to the lagoon so that Sam could actually get into the water. The water might have been slightly warmer than a few weeks ago when we were with Anne, Thistle and Phil, but not much. Brrr! We stayed until around 4:30 when the skies were darkening and lucked out with the first raindrops hitting the car windshield just as we were turning off the end of the park road. A lovely mid-week excursion!
Thursday: I've had the past few Thursdays off so it was almost sort of weird to be working for the day π but things are super busy right now, in the office with end of fiscal year, trying to do the paperwork for our PPP loan and hiring a new person for our development position, so I certainly have plenty of work to fill my days! Went into the office early and had a productive, quiet, morning being the only person there. Then it was off to get the grocery shopping done and get in a few more hours of work at home at the kitchen table. So glamorous, I know. π Finally stopped work around 4:30, but it was so hot and steamy out that we decided to just take the day off from walking, so it truly was a zero day!
Friday: Woke up to a dense fog advisory. It was so humid out, literally running through a cloud. Ran the powerlines and Riverside trail. Lots of mushrooms and spiderwebs to be seen, plus numerous handfuls of raspberries and some gorgeous wood lilies rising from the greenery out along the powerlines. (10.0 miles)
Shinleaf, seen amongst the pines along the Riverside trail
So many spiderwebs!
Later in the afternoon, Sam and I headed out for a very hot and steamy powerlines walk around 3:30 when Ryan headed out for his run. There was a lot of stopping for blueberry and raspberry picking, and we were just rambling along, but I was still soaked by the time we got home! (1.8 miles walked)
Saturday: Tropical Storm Fay arrived sometime overnight on Friday with rain and you guessed it, some seriously tropical air! Woke up Saturday morning to find all the windows so fogged over, it was practically impossible to see outside. Whew. Heavy.
I was in no rush to head out into the nastiness, so I had a nice lazy morning drinking coffee and sitting at the computer in the quiet house while everyone else slept. Finally motivated to head out for a run a little after 9:00 am. The clouds burned off while I was out there, and boy was it steamy! For some reason, it seemed like a good idea to run a road loop and go after one the CRs en-route. π Sometimes, I seriously question my sanity, but I did get the CR. Ha! π Suffice to say, I was completely soaked and dripping sweat by the time I was done. π¦ (8.0 miles)
Once I got home, Sam and I spent a fair amount of time going through and cleaning her room. It had become a serious disaster zone! Looked so good once we got it all tidied up, and threw out some of the unnecessary clutter! Then we headed out for an afternoon walk while Ryan got in his run. As warm as Friday but there was at least a decent breeze and it seemed maybe slightly less muggy. More and more raspberries and blueberries ripening up out there. Saw some good mushrooms and two bullfrogs too. (2.0 miles walked)
Sunday: It almost seemed like a given that it was going to be humid this morning, and indeed it was. I could really go for a break in this weather pattern! Headed out through the woods, ran a few of the cart paths, looped around the Heath and wandered onto the trails at the edge of the Cathance and out to Head of Tides. Breezy at least, but it is incredible the extra effort it takes to run in this sort of nasty weather. Ah well, it just means there is more reason to stop and take photos, eat raspberries and walk up the hills! Lots of mushrooms out in the woods, soggy trails, bugs, one deer, two grouse, itchy grasses. Found the patch of black raspberries out at Head of Tides yielding some ripe berries - delish! Definitely not going to say this was a pretty run but glad to have pushed through and gotten in at least a semi-long run this morning. As has been the norm, finished up soaked. π¦π¦ (15.0 miles)
After lunch, we headed up north for a late afternoon outside get-together with Keri and Tyler. Sam and Elise had a blast swimming in the pool and playing, while the adults sat under the umbrella drinking beer and catching up until it got too hot, and then we got into the nice warm pool and lounged around in the water for a while before dinner outside followed up s'mores before we headed home. Such fun and so nice to see friends and let the girls get in some time together! The perfect way to wrap up the weekend.
